Government College (UG & PG)

Govt. College, Anantapur, started in 1916, is the oldest and the most prestigious institution in Rayalaseema (southern A.P.) area and often called " The Grand Old Lady of Rayalaseema ". This college has completed nine decades of yeoman service to the noble cause of education.

On 8th July 1916 this college was started as the Ceded District College (A Second Grade College) with Sri S. E. Ranganathan as its first Principal. To start with, there were 41 students, spread over the different faculties of History, Telugu, Kannada, Sanskrit and Logic under Part - II. In the early years of its functioning, besides the eminent Principal, Sri S. E. Ranganathan, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, teacher of the teachers, ennobled the institution by his service as a member staff. He worked as a Tutor in Philosophy in the college.


The college offers 33 programmes at the U.G. level and 15 programmes at P.G. level.7964 Students are now pursuing Higher Education in this institution, out of which 70% belong to S.C., S.T., and B.C categories. The College has a potential of 144 faculty working relentlessly for achieving institutional goals and objectives. Out of these 5 are Readers , 45 are teachers with Ph.D. , 24 are teachers with M.Phil, 26 are pursuing Ph.D. and 1 is pursuing M.Phil on part-time basis. There are 78 non-teaching and supporting staff, working for the institution day in and day out. The mission of the institution, its goals and objectives are translated into the programmes offered to reflect not only the tradition but also its vision for the future. Inter-disciplinary programmes like M.Sc., Microbiology, and B.Sc., Microbiology, Bio-Technology and Bio-Chemistry are introduced in tune with the fast changing scenario at global level. Indian Heritage and Culture, Science and Civilization, Environmental Studies, Citizenship Education, Human Values and Professional Ethics, and also Introduction to Computers are compulsory subjects at U.G. level. The college has started centre for promotion of ethics and human values by the support of UGC. The college collects feedback from students, academic peers, alumni and industries. The feedback obtained is analyzed, discussed and conclusions drawn are utilized for future improvement in curriculum development, introduction of more number of programmes and for sustaining academic growth of the institution.

The institution has a transparent admission process. Admission into U.G. programmes are undertaken at the institution level basing on merit at Intermediate public examination duly following statutory reservations as per the guidelines of Government of Andhra Pradesh and affiliated University. Selection lists and waiting lists are put up on the notice board. Parents are invited at the time of admissions. In respect of P.G.programmes rank obtained at a common entrance test (SKUCET) conducted by Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapur is taken into consideration and admissions are made by the University authorities.

Academically backward and disadvantaged students are identified and taken care of by conducting remedial classes in all subjects. Tutorial classes are conducted for all students before or after the college hours. Students admitted are put to constant observation following ward counselingsystem. Innovative teaching learning methods include open forum, freedom of expression, problem solving sessions, quiz point, knowledge point, web oriented assignments, class room seminars, group discussions, quiz competitions and socioeconomic surveys. English language laboratory enables the students to acquire communicative skills and other English language improvement techniques.

Computer based testing programme is introduced in English for all students at U.G. level from 2005-2006. Civil Services Foundation Programme of this college mobilizes most of the students towards civil services. Comprehensive annual academic plans are prepared incorporating innovative teaching learning methods, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Teaching notes and teaching diaries are being maintained by all the faculty members and the same is regularly verified by lecturers-in-charge of the departments and the Principal. About 80 teachers have attended number of seminars, conferences, workshops, refresher courses, orientation courses and various training programmes. Accounting programmes like Tally and computer training programmes are conducted for staff at least twice in a year. The quality of teachers is quite evident from the fact that 26 teachers in the past have received AP State Best Teacher Awards.

The college follows self-appraisal methods by teaching staff duly following the parameters of Commissioner of Collegiate Education, A.P., Hyderabad, UGC and NAAC. Knowledge and Skills acquired by the students are assessed continuously by conducting unit tests, terminal examinations, pre final examinations and model practical examinations. Syllabus, annual academic schedule, previous question papers and principles of evaluation are communicated to the students at the beginning of the academic year. Annual examination at U.G. level and semester examinations at UG & P.G. level are conducted by affiliating university. The institution encourages research culture among the faculty members through the Faculty Development Programme offered by UGC. Research committee is constituted to monitor academic research and to provide facilities. 10 Minor Research Projects funded by UGC, SERO Hyderabad are completed and 08 are in progress. Faculty offers consultancy service to local public, farmers, other colleges, neighbourhood industries and non-government organizations and to old Students at free of cost. The college responds to the local community needs by conducting socially useful programmes like Adult Literacy Programmes, Blood Donation Camps, AIDS Awareness programmes, Health and Nutrition programmes, Pulse Polio immunization programmes, Socio-economic surveys, adoption of villages and slums and other extension activities.

Departments of Commerce, Political science and Economics conducted Socio Economic Surveys as part of Society Outreach Programmes. There are 2 units of NCC, one for men and another for women and 5 units of NSS. Cadets of NCC and volunteers of NSS participate regularly in extension activities, Special Camps, National integration camps and Republic Day parade in New Delhi. The institution has adequate infrastructure facilities consisting of 43 class rooms, 26 laboratories, a central library, and 300 systems. 143 systems have internet connectivity. Three play grounds covering an area of more than 5 acres are available forconduct of sports and games like football, hockey, cricket, volleyball, etc. The college central library offers different types of services to the students and faculty and has more than 1,00,000 rare and latest volumes with open access system, borrow system and 9 computers having internet facility. Every department has departmental library and SC/ST book bank. Both men and women students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities like debates, elocution, essay writing, quiz competition etc. Eco club, Literary Association, Women Empowerment cell. Academic and Career Guidance cell, District Resource Center, Consumer Protection cell, Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Jawahar Knowledge Centre etc. help students to update their knowledge. Student charter of the Government of Andhra Pradesh and NAAC are followed. Financial support is provided by way of scholarships to students of marginalized sections of society.

DRC arranges guest lectures in all GDCs of the district by allotting the staff of other GDCs. Also it sponsors Workshops, Quiz Programs, e.t.c. at district level. Dr. B.R.Ambedkar open university study center and Telugu Academy Book Center have been maintained by the principal as Coordinator. About 2100 inmates (both UG & PG) are residing in college attached student managed menís hostel which is in the college premises. A new menís hostel building worth Rs.6.0 crores was constructed in 2012 with 120 rooms accommodating around 1200 students. A Womenís hostel with an outlay of 45 lakhs is constructed and commenced during 2014-2015 accommodating 150 women students. A new dining hall for menís hostel of worth Rs.3.0 crores is under construction. Transparency and accountability is ensured in all matters at all levels through a meticulous observance of rules and regulations, which are in force. College Planning and Development Committee (CPDC), Staff Council and the other 45 committees, some comprising students, regularly conduct meetings and take decisions assuring transparency and accountability in the matters like infrastructure, academic, administrative and financial aspects of the institution.

The proactive Internal Quality Assurance Cell co-ordinates the academic ambience of the institution constantly interacting with the lecturers-in-charge of all departments, experts from local community and local industry. Jawahar knowledge centre provides different types of skills to the students to make them employable at the exit level and organizes Job melas and campus recruitment drives in the campus. District Resource Centre offers faculty exchange and Special training programme for students to face various competitive examinations. Self-finance courses have been introduced in respect of Computer Science, Microbiology, Bio Technology, Bio Chemistry, Electronics, Commerce at U.G. level and Organic Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Micro Biology, Political Science, Telugu, Botany, History, Economics, English, Commerce, Statistics, Physics, Zoology and Geology at P.G. level to cater the needs of local community.

It is a proved fact that NAAC accreditation is a stepping stone for realizing the grand vision of any institution. This institution is Accredited and Reaccredited at ĎAí grade achieving high C.G.P.A score of 3.21 among government degree colleges of the state assuring high quality of education and infrastructure. The involvement of all teaching, non-teaching and support staff has been total and phenomenal in the preparation of SSR for III Cycle. This augurs well for the institution to march on its journey towards quality because Quality is a Journey but not a Destination.
